My name is Miss Lizzie, and I’ve been teaching at Forte since Autumn 2019. I am a classical singer, choral conductor and pianist, and I trained at Cardiff University. In addition to teaching at Forte, I conduct a community choir here in Cardiff, and I sing with the St Martin in Roath Liturgical Choir. In the past I have also sung with the BBC National Chorus of Wales, the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, and the CBSO Chorus.
Here at Forte I teach classes, starting with Jungle Music and Music is Fun through to Junior Keys and Piano Keys. I also teach singing and piano in one-to-one lessons. I have loved making music my whole life, and being able to share that with my students is my favourite part of teaching at Forte.
Who is your favourite composer? Benjamin Britten! I have lots of fond memories of singing his music, and studying his influences at university. I think Hymn to St Cecilia might be one of the most beautiful pieces ever written.
Who’s been the biggest musical influence in your life so far? I’m going to cheat a little bit here and say the whole of the National Youth Choir! I sang with them from 2010-2018, starting as one of the youngest in the training choir and leaving as a section leader and member of the chamber choir. Not only did I sing some amazing music in some amazing places, but their approach to performing, rehearsing, and musicianship has had a huge impact on me.
What’s your favourite piece of music? Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. I’ve been lucky enough to perform it a few times, and it has everything you could ever want in a piece. It’s dramatic, it’s exciting – it’s the blockbuster of classical music!
What style of music do you relax to? I tend to have one particular musical on repeat for a few months until I move onto something else. At the moment it’s The Prom; before that it was Six, and before that Hamilton. Who knows what it will be next!
Who’s your favourite performer? Sierra Boggess. She’s best known for playing Christine in the 25th Anniversary Phantom of the Opera, and has done a huge number of Broadway shows and a few BBC Proms. I’m constantly floored by the amazing things she can do with her voice – and how effortlessly she seems to do them!
