Our Grade 5 Theory course, starting in March 2020, prepares students for the ABRSM exam in November 2020. Running on Tuesday evenings for 25 weeks, this comprehensive course will teach students all aspects of the current ABRSM grade 5 theory curriculum in a relaxed setting.

Learning music theory in a classroom environment takes the pressure off individual students and helps them to understand that everybody struggles a bit with different aspects of the syllabus - they won't be alone if they find intervals impossible to grasp, grouping of notes a challenge, musical terms a foreign language or cadences a chore!

By attending our dedicated theory class, the student won't lose any of their valuable lesson time with their instrumental teacher.

Our aim is to teach students methods and formulas to prepare them for the exam room where the brain chooses to forget facts under pressure. There is, however, no obligation to do an exam at the end of the course.

Course materials will be made available to purchase via the school, including study books and past exam papers. Revision lessons at the end of the course will ensure that students are 'exam ready', provided that they have completed all tasks and responded to teacher feedback.

While no previous theory exam level is required to access the course, it is expected that students joining the class will have a practical knowledge of their instrument to an intermediate level, and therefore will have covered lots of theory in their music lessons without even realising it!
